Mad Girl – Bryony Gordon ★★★★

Blurb: Bryony Gordon has OCD.

It’s the snake in her brain that has told her ever since she was a teenager that her world is about to come crashing down: that her family might die if she doesn’t repeat a phrase 5 times, or that she might have murdered someone and forgotten about it. It’s caused alopecia, bulimia, and drug dependency. And Bryony is sick of it. Keeping silent about her illness has given it a cachet it simply does not deserve, so here she shares her story with trademark wit and dazzling honesty.

A hugely successful columnist for the Telegraph, a bestselling author, and a happily married mother of an adorable daughter, Bryony has managed to laugh and live well while simultaneously grappling with her illness. Now it’s time for her to speak out. Writing with her characteristic warmth and dark humour, Bryony explores her relationship with her OCD and depression as only she can.

My Review:

I will start by admitting it took me a while to get into this book but I am glad that I stuck with it. Many of my followers will know I don’t read much nonfiction but I enjoyed reading this story. Mad Girl gives a massive insight into the world of depression, mental health and OCD even in the darkest, loneliest and scariest times which took guts to write. Now I will state that this book may not be to all readers tastes but for me personally I could relate to certain parts throughout.

Mad Girl is a brutally honest story all about Bryony Gordon and that includes all the good within her life too. I was by Bryony’s side throughout her story and was so glad with how it all turned out for her in the end. This book is written well and easy to read but does contain long chapters for me personally. I awarded four stars and would highly recommend this story to you all if you haven’t read it already.

  1. Brilliant review. I’ve got this book on my TBR after finding it in a charity shop for 50p. I’ve also been diagnosed with OCD so may be a bit hard hitting for me, but also looking forward to it x
