Blurb; On a stifling summer’s day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack’s in charge, she said. I won’t be long.
But she doesn’t come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed for ever.
Three years later, mum-to-be Catherine wakes to find a knife beside her bed, and a note that says: I could have killed you.
Meanwhile Jack is still in charge – of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they’re alone in the house, and – quite suddenly – of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother.
But the truth can be a dangerous thing…
My Review; I had to read this one as I saw so many great reviews for it. It is a brilliant book, clever plenty of unexpected turns but there is one thing that has bugged me with this book and it’s the ending. It just seemed a bit too soon for me, a bit rushed. So much more could have been written and a sentencing seen. But maybe it could lead to a follow on? Who knows…
I felt so sorry for those poor kiddies Jack, and his little sisters. Jack had a lot of responsibility placed on him and he tried his best for his sisters. As for the police force and detective team they didn’t have a clue at all in this book and made several mistakes along the way. Interesting story for sure.
I awarded a fair four stars and would highly recommend. I will be looking into other books by this author in the future.
I’ve enjoyed all the books by this author but my favourite, and therefore my recommendation, is The Facts of Life and Death.
