*BLOG TOUR* Mageborn – Jessica Thorne ★★★★

Blurb; A dark and addictive fantasy read for fans of Graceling and Sarah J. Maas. The life of an orphan soldier becomes entwined with that of the mysterious heir to the throne, whose very presence draws out the secret magic living inside her: a magic that breaks every law she is duty-bound to uphold…

The room is small and dark. Row upon row of jars line the shelves, each one sealed with blood-red wax. The seal’s mark is a twisted circle of briar with gleaming, gold-tipped thorns. And in each jar a flicker of forbidden magic dances… beautiful, but deadly.

Sold to the Crown in the aftermath of the Last Great War, Grace Marchant has never known her parents. Now, she trains as an elite soldier tracking down mageborn – those born with an ancient and long-outlawed magic – and destroying them if they don’t surrender their power to the Crown.

The mageborn who submit are collared, then handed over to the King’s cousin and heir: the elusive Bastien Larelwynn, Lord of Thorns, locked away in his shadowy workshop deep inside the castle. What becomes of them is hard to say – the Lord of Thorns keeps his secrets close.

Grace has always fought the voice inside her that questions whether the law is truly just – but when her closest friend is next on Bastien’s list, Grace’s loyalties are tested to the limit. Confronting Bastien – searching his strangely compelling obsidian-black eyes for answers – Grace is shocked to feel herself begin to change, to show the first signs of the wild magic she so fears.

Only the Lord of Thorns has the power to save her and the rest of the mageborn – if he doesn’t destroy them all first…

My Review; This is the first book of a brand new upcoming series The Hollow King which has me very excited! I loved it. I also think the cover is stunning. A brilliant start to this series which already has me asking and wondering…

WHAT HAPPENS NOW? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

I loved Graces character. She’s strong, determined and the boss. She is an amazing character after all she had to face and her relationship with Bastien (the lord of thorns) oooh. Loved them together. A couple that shouldn’t be… But are perfect together. True love. The ending left me speechless. Revenge. Lies. Truths. I really need to know what happens next… Major cliffhanger alert. Cue bookhangover.

Brilliantly written and gripping. Highly recommend. I lost myself into their world instead of mine which I enjoyed. A well deserved four stars from me. An upcoming series that could be huge!

Viper – Bex Hogan ★★★★★

Blurb; He will make me a killer. Or he will have me killed. That is my destiny.

Seventeen-year-old Marianne is fated to one day become the Viper, defender of the Twelve Isles.

But the reigning Viper stands in her way. Corrupt and merciless, he prowls the seas in his warship, killing with impunity, leaving only pain and suffering in his wake.

He’s the most dangerous man on the ocean . . . and he is Marianne’s father.

She was born to protect the islands. But can she fight for them if it means losing her family, her home, the boy she loves – and perhaps even her life?

My Review; Oh wow. Where do I even begin? Viper is a brilliant start to a new upcoming trilogy Isles of Storm and Sorrow and I already cannot wait for the next one (Venom). This was all I could think about until it was finished. It is a real page turner you will not want to put down and it has a gorgeous cover too, eye catching.

I loved the map in the front of the book, I think that’s a new obsession of mine. Sets the scene in my mind! I loved how the story was set on a ship (the viper) in the seas, but also a lot of the story takes place on the different isles. Absolutely brilliant how each isle is so different and how the east and the west differ, I found that brilliant and amazing to even think of, thanks Bex.

I adored Marriannes character! She is amazing, strong and brave. What she went through, how she fought. I look up to her. Her father however, I absolutely despised. Thinking he was the best and everyone should do as he says… No thanks. Bronn he is such a sweetheart! I really hoped he and Marrianne would get together, I still have hope for them yet. They seem so perfect for each other, childhood sweethearts! Finger crossed.

It all finishes with a happish ending with a few hard hitting loses of some brilliant characters, but I really cannot wait to see where this trilogy takes us. A must read for all fantasy fans. A well deserved five stars from me. Highly recommend. I buddy read this book with the beautiful Jacqueline from The Pufflehuffle Kitteh Reads so keep an eye out as she will also be reviewing Viper soon. You can find her blog here;

*BLOG TOUR* The 13th Witch – Mark Hayden ★★★★

Blurb; Ever had a text from a deity?
Conrad Clarke did.

Someone has plans for Conrad, and those plans don’t involve an easy life.

Conrad Clarke, former RAF pilot and alleged gangster is dragged out of his comfort zone by a visit from The Allfather.

Norse gods in twenty-first century England?
Don’t be silly. Load of nonsense.

Before you can say “Ragnarok”, Conrad is plunged into a world of gods, Mages, Witches, Dwarves and one rather aggressive giant mole.

But he has next to no magick of his own.

Armed with nothing but a sense of humour and a willingness to cheat, Conrad has to save the Witch – and his life.

My Review; Fantasy is not usually my genre of choice but I am hoping to broaden my horizons by delving more into this genre which is why I gave this one a shot! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading it and actually loved it!

This book has it all witches, dwarfs, giant moles, magic and more! Absolutely loved it I was right beside Conrad all the way and taken on a rather unusual adventure. However, I must admit I had to research some words at the beginning! Its a great start to the trilogy. Brilliantly written.

Conrad is a strong and determined character and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for him in the next two books. I have already got them waiting in my basket to buy! Not a big fantasy lover but definitely getting into the genre and this was a great start into that genre.

I awarded a fabulous four stars and would highly recommend the 13th witch! I will be reviewing the rest of the trilogy at some point in the future no doubt, but I really enjoyed this one. It took me away from the real world into a fantasy filled world. Bliss.
