A Thousand Perfect Notes – C.G. Drews. ★★★★

Blurb; An emotionally charged story of music, abuse and, ultimately, hope.

Beck hates his life. He hates his violent mother. He hates his home. Most of all, he hates the piano that his mother forces him to play hour after hour, day after day. He will never play as she did before illness ended her career and left her bitter and broken. But Beck is too scared to stand up to his mother, and tell her his true passion, which is composing his own music – because the least suggestion of rebellion on his part ends in violence.

When Beck meets August, a girl full of life, energy and laughter, love begins to awaken within him and he glimpses a way to escape his painful existence. But dare he reach for it?

My Review; I read a previous book by this author and really enjoyed it so I decided to pick this one up. This was a hard read for me at 27 years old. So more for a mature reader. It does contain quite violent scenes and abuse within the home. This is a really emotional story and parts hurt me to read. No child should have to experience what Beck and his sister have. Breaks my heart.

But it’s also a story full of friendship, love, music and a happy ending. It really did make me tear up. The author has written this story carefully but also tackled some tough issues within the story perfectly. A tough read. Becks mum is high on my characters to hate list! I awarded this four stars.

*BLOG TOUR* This is how we are human – Louise Beech ★★★★★

Blurb; When the mother of an autistic young man hires a call girl to make him happy, three lives collide in unexpected and moving ways … changing everything. A devastatingly beautiful, rich and thought-provoking novel that will warm your heart.

My Review; This is my absolute favourite book of Louise’s yet! Stunning. Perfection. Beautiful. Emotional. I bloody loved it all. I will shout about this book for a long time. It’s a must read and a must buy. It has gone straight into my top reads of the year.

It’s beautifully and brilliantly written. I devoured it. The chapters are short. I fell in love with Sebastians character, he is just so freaking adorable. We get to see his world in this story. We get to see how he is treated by others, his feelings and his thoughts. He’s a clever chap. It’s a thought provoking story but also one where we see him change and grow.

You can tell the author has put a lot of time, thought and research into this book, by basing it on a true story she had to get it right. Absolutely stunning. Cannot recommend it enough. A well deserved five stars and more. Buy it you will not regret this one. A story that will remain in my heart forever.

*BLOG TOUR* Songs For Your Mother – Gordon Macmillan ★★★★

Blurb; I’m greeted by the strangest sight. A small dark-haired boy is standing there. It’s like he’s a human parcel, delivered to my front door.

‘My name is Luke,’ he says.

When Johnny meets Lauren in a bar in Santa Cruz, there’s an instant connection. On an American road trip with best friend Will, Johnny promises to return to the girl who has stolen his heart.

Until tragedy strikes, forcing Johnny to fly back home without ever seeing Lauren again.

Six years later, Johnny is living his life in London, even if he’s never forgotten the girl with the grey eyes and dark hair.

Until one September morning, he opens his door to find a little boy standing there – a child, Johnny quickly comes to learn, who was created that one magical night. Lauren is dying, and her last wish is to reunite five-year-old Luke with the father he doesn’t yet know.

Thrown into unexpected parenthood, Johnny finds himself navigating school-gate politics, Disney movies and tantrums, guided by the notes Lauren has written for him.

Life as an instant dad isn’t always easy, but as Johnny and Luke open their hearts to each other, Johnny is about to discover that life’s joy isn’t always where you expected it.

My Review; This took me a while to get into but woah when I got into it I devoured it. Such a beautiful story about a bond between a father and son. The ups and down of parenthood! But also contains an upsetting storyline regarding the mother but it honestly is a beautiful read! I smiled. I teared up. I loved little Luke what an amazing little lad he is. Some kids are just super heros it must not have been easy for him.

I did think the ending was cut off suddenly and could have been so much more. A bit of a cliffhanger for me. I wanted more. I want to know what happened. Please. Someone tell me. A beautiful cover. I loved it all. I loved all the characters. A story of hope. A story of a new start. A life change. Beautiful. A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend.
