The Midnight Library – Matt Haig ★★★★★

Blurb; ‘Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices… Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?’

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

My Review; I don’t think I can do this book/review enough justice but I’m going to give it my best shot… If there is one book I would urge you and shout at you to buy it would be this on. Go do it. Treat yourself You will not regret it. I promise. This is going straight into my top twenty of the year reads. I’ve awarded it five stars and I’d award more if I could! How do I start?

I must admit it’s not what I expected at all. But I feel it was just what I needed right now honestly. This book is going to be huge. This book for me was amazing, outstanding, life changing, powerful and thought provoking. Honestly have you ever felt so low you wanted to die? Then this book is for you. It will change your whole perspective on life. It has for me. It’s taught me A LOT of life lessons and how I see my life. I actually have fallen in love with this book and I don’t say that lightly.

I don’t want to ruin this for anyone but if you could view every possible outcome of your life would you? Would you ever be happy? Just wow. It’s taught me to open my eyes, appreciate what I have not what I want. Life is life. Life is beautiful. I loved it all. I devoured it in a day. Beautifully told. An easy read for me done in a day but one I felt I NEEDED to read right at this moment in my life. Now this is my review others may feel differently about this book and some may hate it. But I cant explain how much I loved, enjoyed and needed this book. One I can always go back too when I’m feeling low. Uplifting.

So thank you Matt. Absolutely brilliant. Grateful. It’s really made me think and I miss it already. Perfection.

Shadows of Winterspell – Amy Wilson ★★★★

Blurb; Stella has been living behind the magic of the forest for most of her life. Lonely, she enrolls at the local school, and as she begins to make friends, she discovers that she is even more different than she thought. But as autumn turns to magical winter, Stella realizes that uncovering her own family secret is the only way to release the forest from the grip of a dark and old magic.

My Review; I was drawn to this by the beautiful cover and ended up buying them all in the end. Another YA story full of magic, fairies, fai, ghosts and imps. An adventure. I absolutely loved it. Another easy read that could easily be read in one setting, a lovely ending.

Stella lives with her ghost nan, an imp and her cat but she wants a ‘normal’ life. She gets herself enrolled in the local school, makes friends and is enjoying life. Until she realises she is part of an old story/myth. One that still needs sorting/fixing and that is exactly what she is going to do. She is one brave, strong and adventurous girl but it won’t be as easy as she thinks.

A brilliant story. A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend. I cant wait to read all this authors other stories. I love finding new authors.

The Kingdom Of Back – Marie Lu ★★★★

Blurb; Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish: to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she’ll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be. She is a young woman in eighteenth-century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her. She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age—her tyrannical father has made that much clear.

As Nannerl’s hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true—but his help may cost her everything.

My Review; This is the first book I have read by marie Lu, I’ve heard she’s an amazing author and I do have her others on my shelf waiting. I treated myself to this one purely for the gorgeous cover. How beautiful is that!?

When I started reading it I must admit it wasn’t what I expected at all. But I carried on and before I knew it. I was hooked. It’s a mix between historical fiction and fantasy and it works perfectly. Two completely different worlds. The story focuses on music (piano) by Nannerl and Wolfgang Mozart. Nannerl wishes she won’t she be forgotton and her wish will soon be granted via helping another in a fantasy world herself and her brother created, but everything is not as it seems and she may have got it all wrong.

The story includes the highs and lows of both the siblings. The tasks Nannerl has to complete for her wish to come true but it soon turns dark and twisted. Nannerl has to fix it all before her wish costs her the most important thing (her brother). Brilliant written, imaginative, original. Perfect. I seriously loved it. Highly recommend. A well deserved four stars from me.
