Illuminae – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff ★★★★★

Blurb; Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the worst thing she’d ever been through. That was before her planet was invaded. Now, with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating craft, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But the warship could be the least of their problems. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their biggest threat; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady plunges into a web of data hacking to get to the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: Ezra.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents–including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more–Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

My Review; Illuminae is book one in the Illuminae files and I have seen these books everywhere so I thought I would give it ago. However, I am not a huge Sci-Fi fan, I think overall I’ve only read a couple of Sci-Fi books before. I went into this book thinking it wasn’t for me or worried about not understanding the story… HOW WRONG WAS I? I loved it.

I loved the whole layout the story is told in through files, messaging apps, emails, reports and camera footage etc. It makes it a real unique story to read and easy to read. I love that diagrams were also throughout the story so the reader knows exactly what the ‘ships’ look like and how big they are. Amazing.

Within the story there’s a love story between Kady and Ezra which takes away the Sci-Fi edge a bit for me. I loved both there characters. Kady is clever, fearless, brave and a real hero in this story. However, there is all the doom and gloom to come alongside this… They are being followed by an Enemy warship and need to get away as they stand no chance against it. There is also a deadly plague loose on one of the other ships turning people into violent, killing and bloody monsters. Will they survive the virus? Will they get away from the enemy? Will they all survive? Will Aidan (the computer system) help them or turn against them? A tense read that will have you turning the pages for fun. Brilliant!

So after all that I throughally enjoyed every minute of this I actually read 520 pages of it in one day (out of 600 pages). I did have to concentrate at first but it soon became easier to read. A great book to start with if you want to try Sci-Fi. A well deserved five stars from me, highly recommend. I cannot wait to see what happens in the following books.

Nightchaser – Amanda Bouchet. ★★★★

Blurb; Tess Bailey: the galaxy’s Most Wanted.
Captain Tess Bailey is in deep trouble. She and her crew are on the run, pursued by a tyrant who’ll take them dead or alive. Tess’s best hope is a tall, dark, and much-too-appealing stranger, Shade Ganavan, who says he can help her. But his motivations are far from clear…

Shade Ganavan: arrogance, charm…and that special something that makes you want to kick him.
With the dreaded Dark Watch closing in, what Tess and Shade don’t know about each other might get them killed…unless they can set aside their differences and learn to trust each other before it’s too late.

My Review; This is my first sci-fi/romance read and I loved it. Something different. It took me a while to get into but then I was hooked. I loved both Tess and Shade’s characters, bless them both. Shade was really torn throughout but did the best thing with a happy ending for all… For now.

They have plenty of ups and downs ahead and many fights and escaping to endure but they work as a team with the others on board the endeavour, more like family really. A great read that had my imagination on fire. Brilliantly written. Very impressed and a gorgeous cover too.

Nightchaser is book one in The Endeavour Trilogy and I cannot wait to see while lies ahead for these beautiful characters in book two. A well deserved four stars from me highly recommend.

*BLOG TOUR* Wanderers – Chuck Wendig ★★★★

Blurb; A decadent rock star. A deeply religious radio host. A disgraced scientist. And a teenage girl who may be the world’s last hope. In the tradition of The Stand and Station Eleven comes a gripping saga that weaves an epic tapestry of humanity into an astonishing tale of survival.

Shana wakes up one morning to discover her little sister in the grip of a strange malady. She appears to be sleepwalking. She cannot talk and cannot be woken up. And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and are sister are not alone. Soon they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And like Shana, there are other “shepherds” who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.

For on their journey, they will discover an America convulsed with terror and violence, where this apocalyptic epidemic proves less dangerous than the fear of it. As the rest of society collapses all around them–and an ultraviolent militia threatens to exterminate them–the fate of the sleepwalkers depends on unraveling the mystery behind the epidemic. The terrifying secret will either tear the nation apart–or bring the survivors together to remake a shattered world.

My Review; Where do I start? Now usually books over 400 pages scare me. So this being 800 pages long terrified me and not to mention hurt my hands to hold. However, I split it up over three days and some late nights (270 pages roughly a day) and it was absolutely brilliant. Not something that I would usually read or pick up but glad that I did.

I haven’t read anything similar to this before so I found it very interesting and intriguing which kept me turning those pages. Don’t expect to race through this book cause you can’t, it’s too long! I would love to see this turned into a film or tv series. I did find I had to concentrate more while reading this book to understand some of the science and abbreviations within.

However, I’m not complaining. It was a pleasure to read this book, something different, thought proving and eye opening. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am very impressed. It also has a beautiful cover. You can tell the author has put a lot of time and research into producing this book for us readers.

I don’t have much to say about the actual plot of the story as there is a lot going on throughout so it would be impossible to highlight it all. However, Shana deserves a mention for sticking by her sister, loved her character. A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend. If you have the time please give this one a read.
